Edward Davis goes back 35 centuries in search of two individuals lost in a previous time jump. It is a shock to him even though he was prepaired and knew what was comming:

"He wanted to cry. He was so dazed, so weakened by the impact of his leap through time, so overwhelmed."

But his arrival is not good news for everyone:

"When they had gone far enough from the House of Life so that there was no chance the breeze might carry her voice upward to the sick man in the pavilion she said, speaking suddenly in English, “Someone from downtime showed up in Thebes today, Roger. From Home Era.”
The shift to English was like the throwing of a switch. It was years since she had spoken it, and the effect was immediate and emphatic for her."

And his mission doesn't go as expected even though it was so carefully planned:

"He had danced his way through life, sneaked his way through, dealt somehow with all the uncertainties and the perils and the cruelties. Held his own. More than held his own. He had done very well for himself, in fact. And then had taken one risk too many; and now the game was up. He had run up against a pair of players who were willing to cast him aside without hesitation and with nothing more than the pretense of remorse."
