.: Terminology :.
DRM3 - "Inscribed" ebooks are sealed just as DRM 2 ebooks (DRM 2, or "Sealed" books are simple encrypted .lit files, which can be read with any copy of Microsoft Reader.) but include the additional security measure of having the purchaser information always displayed on the cover page of the book.
DRM5 - "Owner Exclusive" ebooks are licensed to only the purchaser and will only be readable on a Reader client registered to the purchaser. A good news is, Microsoft increased the number of allowable reader clients from two to four when working with owner exclusive titles. DRM5 eBooks are only compatible with MS Reader included in PocketPC 2002 and later... but I still advise you not to buy DRM5 eBooks if possible.
DRM stands for Digital Rights Management and is used in MS Reader.
.: Nostalgia :.
Check out my old eBooks page. I removed all eBook entries from it, but it's still online because I have two paperback books posted and you can also access my OnLine Audrey Rose commentary from there.
MS Reader uses Cleartype technology and has a built in dictionary. This makes it a great reader, but! It's not so easy to get a great book that's PocketPC compatible, since you can not read DRM5 eBooks on your PDA. And even if you could I would advise you not to buy DRM5 .lit eBooks. I still use it the most though. Palm Reader has a great collection of new titles (incl. paperback bestsellers) thanks to its better protection scheme. It now also offers Cleartype technology, but I still prefer MS Reader formatting and its built in dictionary - a great feature for those of us whos native language isn't English. Mobipocket is compatible with a whole bunch of devices and they have a great PC portion of software that automatically syncs eNews from predefined sources. When you download a book all you need to do is click on the file and eBook will transfer automatically.
PPC compatible .lit Webring is a great resource for those of you who are looking for something to read on your PocketPC.
Only sites that offer PocketPC compatible MS Reader eBooks are allowed to join. This ring is listed on PocketPC magazine best sites list, so don't hesitate to join in case you have a site like this!

Title: The Last Chance Cafe Author: Linda Lael Miller
My rating:
Well, it started out well, but then it got too ideal and all the events in Primrose Creek were just too unrealistic. And after that it just went downhill - it changed into a "soap opera". And when those two fake FBI agents showed up ... well all the following events are barely worth mentioning as they are over after just a few pages and then we are back to the "soap opera".
I like books where there is some romance involved, but this is far too much. Unless you like watching soap operas I suggest you to read something else and not waste your time with this one. It' too bad because it started out great...
Electronic version costing more than the paper one - not normal if you ask me. I am reading the one that MS gave out for free though ;)
I must admit I was convinced when I read through the first chapter. And I am sure that's exactly what the author wanted. Off to a very good and interesting start. It's a good book and l first thought I would give it 4.5 books, but when I read through, I changed my mind and decided for 4 points. There is something missing at the end, and if you already read my other comments you probably know, that ending is the most important part of the book what concerns me. Don't understand me wrong, it's a great book, there is always something happening and ...[more]
Tom Winters is different than most. He is not as trustful as most others. It will first look a bit strange to you, why they were accepted so smoothly and all the events will certainly rise a few questions. Why are they stuck here and are they really? With all this advanced technology? My thoughts were, that something must be wrong and I soon found out answers to all my questions.
An excerpt from the novel: "But Clare’s life hadn’t changed at all. Before the aliens had arrived her sole aim in life had been looking after her little girl and providing for her. Today that aim remained exactly the same."
Whole novel is presented to the reader through the eyes of Tom Winters and you are aware of events that happen in a small village by the seaside and nearest surroundings.
Title: Straight To You Author: David Moody Genre: sci-fi
My rating:
It's actually a love story, with the end of the world nearing. Temperatures are rising each day and future does not look good. Whole story happens within two weeks at the end of November and the red line is journey of Steven to a small village called Colliwell, where his girlfriend left (to visit her grandmother) a day before he himself decided to follow. It's hard to imagine how people would react at the point where inevitable becomes obvious with ever increasing temperatures and energy pulses. After you read through you will certainly ask yourself why didn't they move behind those remaining walls of the stone cottage, but I guess it would not make a difference... I'd say it is an easy winter reading material as it woul not be wise to read it during a summer like it was the one we had this year. Hopefully next year it'll be better... Just last week I read an article in NewScientist about a dying sun - what will happen when our star comes to the end of its lifespan in roughly 7 billion years from now. Interesting article - you can find it in the issue of 6th of December 2003. You can download first half of the novel for FREE from David Moody website.
Title: Autumn: The City Author: David Moody Genre: horror
My rating:
As you know (if you read my comments on the first eBook in the Autumn trilogy) I am not exactly a fan of horror eBooks; this was actually the second one I ever read and that's because I want to find out what happened, what caused it all and how it will end. I have to say it was an interesting read and if you read the first book you certainly need to read this one too. You will find out some new details about the events, but nothing definite, for that we will have to wait for the third book. What I noticed is, that people ('the survivors' as author often calls them) in this second novel are somehow more "clever" as the ones in the first book. I read through the book within a few days, as something is always happening that won't let you put it down. All I can say is, that I can hardly wait for the last part of the trilogy, to finally find out what happened and how it will end. If horror books fall into your category than this is certainly a must read! For readers like me, if you don't want to read horror books, than don't start at all, because you won't be able to stop ;). You can download a FREE Autumn novel from David Moody's website. The second eBook is available for purchase and as all other eBooks by David Moody, the .lit version is DRM3.

This is also one of the free titles offered by Microsoft at their MS Reader website. I hope you did not miss any of the free e-books since they are not stored online. You can only download them that certain week and they are all DRM5 eBooks. This is the first title from this "pool of free eBooks" I started reading - it's been quite a busy summer and thus I haven't read much. But all these eBooks will wait and hopefully it'll be a more productive winter ;) I, personally, wouldn't call this book a bestseller. I read it through after I got my PocketPC back and I must admit it was kind of boring. There is not happening much that would keep you reading on and it only gets a little tenser at the last quarter of the book. I am not exactly sure what is the point of the whole novel; if it is finding Marinth, then the author didn't give enough detail into that. If you are looking for an exciting book to read, I suggest you to pick some other title. But as always, this is just my personal opinion and you are welcome to post your own comments.
